Alstom has been awarded a €900m contract to supply core power generation equipment for a new 900MW coal fired power plant to be built at the Rybnik site in Poland.

The contract has been awarded by Elektrownia Rybnik (ERSA) and will be executed in two phases: phase I of the contract, worth around €100m ($134m), covers pre-engineering and support to ERSA during the permitting process and is effective immediately; the second, €800m ($1.07bn) phase, will be effective after the full notice to proceed, expected mid-2013.

Under the terms of the contract, Alstom will supply the boiler, its coal milling system and the complete turbine hall, including steam turbine, generator and the balance-of-plant auxiliaries.

Alstom will be responsible for the design, engineering, supply, erection, commissioning and testing of the delivered equipment.

The new plant is being constructed at the same site and will be fired by hard coal and biomass. Upon construction of the new unit, the total ERSA generation capacity is expected to meet about 12% of the electricity demand in Poland.
