Development of the 1,000kW-class gas engine (MD20G).

The MD20G, the lean burn gas engine with an open chamber type micro-pilot ignition system, has been developed by Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. The base engine of MD20G is the diesel engine Daihatsu DK20. Technologies such as the Miller cycle and detection of abnormal combustion by linear prediction analysis are applied to the MD20G to achieve high generating efficiency. Furthermore, the power recovery system from exhaust gas, which consists of a directly coupled turbo-charger and generator, is installed for still higher generating efficiency. It is confirmed from the operation data that the engines are operated at the expected generating efficiency of 42.5%, the world’s highest level in the 1,000kW-class gas engines.

The gas engine developed has superior durability and reliability. By introduction of the technology as described, the diesel engine was converted into gas engine resulting in high efficiency and high power. The engine achieved power generation efficiency of 42.5%, the highest level for 1MW class engine and mean effective pressure of 2MPa.

Experimental investigations – the basis for reliable prediction and risk assessment.

The application of the advanced engineering and technical solutions requires the necessity to carry out experimental investigations to receive the data for risk assessment. The article describes a universal algorithm for risk assessment of the system components subjected to high temperatures. The research results of such parameters as flow dynamics and heat transfer of wall jets are presented in the article. The data is obligatory to define boundary conditions at thermal state analysis of gas turbine nozzle blade with cross baffles that will be used for risk assessment by simulation modeling.

Low-emission combustion chamber for NK-series gas turbines.

The main field of investigation is designing of so-called dry combustion systems. Such combustion systems equipped with low-emission combustion chambers operate in single mode thus providing the decrease of NOx and CO emissions. At Samara Scientific & Technical Complex named after N.D.Kuznetsov a new technology of low-emission combustion for NK-series gas turbine annular combustion chambers was developed.

Diesel power plant at Kharyaginskoye field: complex approach to the solution of power challenges.

Zvezda-Energetika production and engineering company continually takes part in large power projects for foreign customers, and each time its activity is highly estimated. The article describes project execution for TOTAL, French energy group.

The delivery includes four power units on the base of C2250D5 diesel engine by Cummins Inc. with unit capacity of 1600 kW and container-type electrical equipment.

In spite of tight schedule and the necessity to make changes in equipment traditional design, the company managed to manufacture and package all the necessary equipment in the period of half a year.

Technical operation and maintenance of gas turbine power units.

The article is devoted to the question of technical operation of stationary gas turbine power units, and their dependence on on-site power plant maintenance – the influence of air-gas channel clogging, irregular flow distribution at compressor input according to the angle and speed, and the influence of unstable temperature on flow characteristics.

The article examines start-up characteristics of gas turbine units with the application of static frequency converter or alternating current motor, varying and transient modes of operation of one-shaft gas turbine units.

Having analyzed the experience of gas turbine maintenance the authors note that Siemens, GE and Alstom recommend scheduling maintenance of gas turbine power units depending on the type (autonomous, cogeneration, combined-cycle, industrial).

On-site maintenance of gas turbine power units of high and medium capacity, of converted and marine turbines of lower capacity differs greatly. The article reveals the principal factors influencing gas turbine high-temperature part life time, examination procedure of built-in compressor stations and gas turbine high-pressure part.

Heat exchange intensification in the RB gas path.

Power generation plant (PP) efficiency increase is achieved through use of the “waste” heat of exhaust gases in the recovery boilers (RB) and the “hot” water or water vapor supply to consumers.

It is demonstrated that the heat exchange intensification in the RB gas path using wire helical insertions (WHI) could not only improve mass-size parameters of RB but, also, ensure: a standardization of RB modules for wide power spectrum engines; a substantial lowering in the PP engine noise level at its power-and-heat generation condition running.

Dynamic Fuel Systems technology to decrease fuel consumption of diesel engines by 10 %.

The increase of diesel engine effectiveness is one of the urgent questions to be solved in the circumstances when oil resources are gradually vanished. Fuel-saving technology developed by Dynamic Fuel Systems allows reducing significantly diesel fuel consumption in drive mechanisms of various applications.

Dynamic Fuel Systems Inc. took its name in connection with fuel-saving technology developed known as the Jetstar™ which is used for upgrading of diesel engines in operation.

As a result dynamic fuel savings and reduced emissions solutions for the heavy haul transportation sectors are achieved. At present thanks to significant investments in research and development the company brings the technology to enter additional markets.

The customers’ reaction to Jetstar has been varied. In the beginning, some companies, even with third-party validation, still believed that the Jetstar was just another technology with claims of fuel-efficiency improvement and emissions reductions that just won't work. The difference with Jetstar is that it does work.

The government of Canada, the USA and EU support green technologies developments in all spheres of industry. This gives a chance of widely-spread application of this technology.
