Based on advanced technology from GE, a new combined-cycle power plant at Montoir de Bretagne in the Loire Atlantique region of western France was officially inaugurated today and is producing 435 megawatts of power, enough to serve about 450,000 French households.

The plant is owned and operated by GDF SUEZ, the French multinational energy company, and enables GDF SUEZ to provide additional electricity to the South Brittany region, especially during peak demand periods such as the winter months.

The new combined-cycle facility features a GE 109FB combined-cycle system including a Frame 9FB gas turbine, a high efficiency advanced technology steam turbine and associated generators.

Using F-technology gas turbines recently upgraded by GE, Turkish company ENKA set a new standard for global power plant availability over the 12-month period ending November 2010. ENKA’s Adapazari and Gebze generating stations, with a total installed capacity of 2,320 MW powered by GE Frame 9FA+e gas turbines, achieved 99.8 percent availability, which is nearly 7 percent higher than the industry average and a global record in F-class gas turbine technology.

The significant increase in availability allowed the Adapazari and Gebze plants to generate an additional 1.3 million megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity, enough to meet the needs of 300,000 households. The high availability also produced additional income for ENKA and avoided the need to build a new 150-megawatt power plant to meet growing electricity demands.

Total electric power output of the station is 26.19 MW. It will be designed around three Wartsila 20V34SG gas engine power plants each rated at 8.73 MW. The station will be equipped with waste-heat recovery system with output of 13.5 MW, and will operate in parallel with power grid. Generated thermal power is used for technological needs of the enterprise and for central heating.

Zvezda-Energetika JSC is the general designer and general constructor of the project. The specialists of the company will carry out installation, civil and commissioning works.

GE’s first 2.75-103 wind turbine recently was commissioned at the Energy Research Center of the Netherlands wind farm in Wieringermeer, Netherlands. Wieringermeer is located in Northern Netherlands near Ijsselmeer.

The new turbine features electrical system uprates and GE’s 50.2 meter proprietary blade design that offers an annual energy production increase of more than nine percent at 7.5 m/s over the 2.5-100 machine. One 2.75-103 wind turbine can provide energy for approximately 2,000 German homes.

GE’s 2.75-103 utilizes GE’s 50.2 meter blade design that offers the latest enhancements in aerodynamics, reduced acoustic emissions and robust performance. Featuring a 103-meter rotor, the new wind turbine is optimized for IEC Sb and DIBT WZ2 standards. It is available for 50 and 60 Hz applications with 75, 85 and 98-meter hub heights.
