Iberdrola Renovables, via its subsidiary ScottishPower Renewables, is already the leading developer and generator of onshore wind energy in the UK, with installed capacity of 932 MW at 26 wind farms

Iberdrola Renovables, via its subsidiary ScottishPower Renewables, has secured the pertinent authorisations from the Scottish government to expand the Whitelee and Black Law wind farms, making them Scotland’s largest wind farms with respective installed capacities of 539 and 193 MW.

Both facilities are located in the vicinity of Glasgow and will be able to supply wind power to 440,000 homes (around 1.3 million people) when they come on stream. This is equivalent to nearly double the population of this city, the largest in Scotland.

Once complete these facilities will also have a significant environmental and social impact, since they will reduce CO2 emissions by some 1.14 million tonnes and create 70 jobs.

The company will start expanding its Whitelee wind power complex by 217 MW this year, reaching a total capacity of 539 MW. This project will cement Whitelee’s status as the biggest wind farm in Europe and one of the five largest worldwide.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has received an order for two steam-turbines, 350 MW each, to be installed at two large-scale coal-fired thermal power plants in Morocco, which Jorf Lasfar Energy Company 5&6, a power plant company owned by Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA), is to build. The turbines are slated to be delivered to a consortium formed by Daewoo Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd. and Mitsui & Co., Ltd. for the construction project.

The large-scale coal-fired power plants, in which the steam turbines are to be installed, will be built in the existing power station in the Jorf Lasfar district, near El Jadida, in the southwest of Casablanca. The two new power plants will be built as the No.5 and No.6 units to expand the station and adjoin existing power plants operated by Jorf Lasfar Energy Company (JLEC), also a subsidiary of TAQA. In addition to supplying the turbines, MHI will also be sending technical advisors.

New state-of-the-art technology is combined with proven reliability in Vestas’ new 2 MW GridStreamerTM platform. Right now, the upgraded version of Vestas’ most experienced family of turbines is launched at this week’s American Wind Energy Association’s (AWEA) fair in California, USA.

Featuring an improved gearbox and larger rotors, the upgraded 2 MW platform substantially surpasses its predecessors in terms of power output. At a typical IEC I site (high wind), the new V90-2.0 MW GridStreamerTM provides approximately 10 per cent more energy output than the V80-2.0 MW. On an IEC II site (medium wind), the new V100-2.0 MW GridStreamerTM produces up to 15 per cent more energy compared to a V90-1.8 MW.
